The opening night of the club’s new season was “President’s Night”, but it was, in fact, our Vice President, Jimmy Smith who presented  the programme which he called “Stuff and Cake” This can best be described as a fun night with such a varied programme, it is difficult to cover it in detail except to say that it was an evening of entertainment with comedy being the main theme. That was the “Stuff” part. The “Cake” part came at the interval with a very tasty spread provided by Jimmy and his wife.

The Creative Use of Sound

At our meeting on 4th October, we had as our guest speaker, Michael Gough FACI(M) from the Newcastle Cine and Video Society. Michael is a Master Moviemaker and gave a fascinating talk on the importance of sound on film, illustrating his talk with many examples of his work. He also demonstrated how he built up his sound tracks.

This was a very enjoyable evening and showed just how important sound was in film, an aspect which is sometimes neglected by moviemakers.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly

At our meeting on 1 November, Norman Speirs FACI of the Edinburgh Cine and Video Society, once again presented a programme of films and invited members to comment on the productions.

There were lively discussions with members expressing their opinions which all helped in the learning process of judging films and identifying the finer points.

Once again this was a very enjoyable evening.

An award-winning film maker from Potters Bar Cine and Video Society,

John Astin LACI was unable to be with us, but sent a showreel of ten

films for us to view.   They ranged from comedy to travelogues, such as

"Landfall Capetown"; a 10 day coach tour of Florida; another coach tour

of Tunisia; and "Paris Revisited" which gave us an insight on Paris when

he visited and filmed there in 1963.   Documentaries included his BIAFF

Gold Award film "The Thames Tunnel" and a BIAFF Silver Plus Award "Show

of Rememberance".   The entire programme was very much enjoyed by all

members.
